|ISO||6.5.5 Climate change mitigation and adaptation|
Prediction of CO2 emissions in the building operation stage and reduction percentage
1 Global standard for calculation and reporting of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions (URL: http://www.ghgprotocol.org/)
2 Calculation range criteria set by the Japan Federation of Construction Contractors
Taisei Corporation received third-party assurance for the Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions calculated utilizing industry organization criteria.
Using the GHG protocol criteria, we calculate 10 categories related to our business out of the total of 15 categories, in which the emissions were approximately 28.7 million t-CO2. The emissions from the use of products sold are the highest, and carbon reduction of buildings is increasingly important.
Disclosure of Environmental Information
In FY2015, we were selected as a leading disclosure company for the CDP*3 Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) for the sixth consecutive year since 2010.
We also participated in the project for the development of infrastructure for environmental information disclosure led by the Ministry of the Environment since 2013.
We will continue to actively disclose our environmental information.
3 CDP: A not-for-profit organization based in the U.K. that sends questionnaires on environmental strategies, GHG emissions, etc. to leading companies around the world and analyzes and evaluates their answers, and publishes the results to investors.
For the Creation of a Low Carbon Society
In recent years, we have been feeling the impacts of global warming and associated climate change more closely, such as landslides caused by extreme torrential rain. While such factors create various environmental risks in continuing corporate activities, they may also provide business opportunities by solving and responding appropriately using technology and initiatives.
The Taisei Corporation Group is making efforts to reduce carbon emissions at all stages of the life cycle from planning and design to construction, operation, renovation, and demolition.
Carbon reduction through the EMS operation, the development of materials that help reduce carbon emissions such as concrete using a reduced amount of cement, and the development of zero-energy buildings (ZEB) and other cutting-edge technologies for energy management and carbon reduction contribute not only to the prevention of global warming, but also to the effective use of natural resources and the reduction of the impact on the natural environment.
Taisei Corporation is carrying out our own "CO2 Zero Action" at all construction sites including building construction and civil engineering, which include activities in seven areas such as the eco-driving of construction machinery and vehicles and the effective use of rainwater.
We are also distributing information on the environmental initiatives through industry groups and the Eco First Promotion Counsel, etc., and we support "COOL CHOICE," a new national movement that will continue until 2030 on the theme of climate change measures and greenhouse gas reduction in the area of carbon reduction.
Additionally, the "Light-down Campaign" organized by the Ministry of the Environment for energy saving has been joined by more than 100 places such as head offices, branch offices, construction sites, etc., and from 2016, on the day of the event, CO2 emission offset using green power has been implemented at the head office, where the power consumption is the highest.

For the Creation of a Resource-recycling Society
All materials used in the construction business are produced, in a broad sense, through the consumption of limited natural resources, and Japan relies on imports for most of the raw materials. This is susceptible to significant risks in business continuity such as the interruption of supply due to disasters caused by extreme climate phenomena. The effective use and recycling of resources require efforts on a global scale, which are also included in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)*1 announced in 2015.
The Taisei Corporation Group strives to make effective use of resources at all stages from planning and design to procurement to construction. We are contributing to the creation of a recycling society through, for instance, the adoption and use of recycled materials such as cement and steel materials that are key materials for construction, the adoption of the precast concrete (PCa) construction method, which is resource- and energy-saving and effective for reducing the environmental impact, raising the recycling rate by thoroughly sorting construction waste during demolition and disposal, and the active use of resource recycling through the sale of valuable materials.
1 SDGs: The acronym of Sustainable Development Goals. At the "United National Sustainable Development Summit 2015," member countries adopted SDGs comprising 17 objectives and 169 targets to accomplish on a global basis.

Guidelines for Green Procurement
Taisei Corporation's "Taisei Corporation Green Procurement Guidelines" were established and operated in 2001 for the purpose of adopting materials and equipment and applying construction methods with low environmental impact during the design, construction, operation, and demolition of buildings. By referring to and reflecting the details of the Green Purchasing Law*2, the items and construction methods (green procurement items) are selected every year. In FY2015, the number of items was 85, including construction, equipment, and civil engineering.
The application in the entire company helps not only the recycled use of resources, but also energy saving, the reduction of CO2 emissions, resource conservation, the non-use of hazardous materials, preservation of the natural environment, etc.
Selecting materials, products, and construction methods with a low environmental impact during the design of buildings reduces not only the environmental impact during production and construction, but also the environmental impact and operation cost when customers use the buildings.
In FY2015, 7.7 items on average were adopted per building design project. Many of such items are water-saving hygiene equipment, LED lighting, and high-efficiency, energy-saving electric appliances.
Taking into account the past achievements, we have increased the target number of green procurement items per project to nine or more in our environmental management goals (Taisei Agenda) from FY2016, and we further encourage environmentally friendly design.

Biodiversity Conservation Technology
- Ikimono Concierge®
- Ikimono (living creatures) Concierge is a computer application for biodiversity-friendly facility planning. The effect of creating green areas and watersides that take biodiversity into consideration, which is generally not very visible, can be quantitatively assessed by estimating and visualizing the possibility of visits by creatures
such as birds, butterflies, and dragonflies. Optimal facility planning is made possible by systematically adopting the perspective of biodiversity from the early stage of facility planning.
Clear results appear quickly by inputting the green area conditions of the planning zone using a tablet PC while having discussions with the client, which permits the easy application of case studies on green and water planning for parks and buildings.
This tool received the 2015 Good Design Award and the Chairperson's Award (Award of Excellence) of the Eco-Products Awards Steering Committee for providing a new approach to biodiversity and contributing to the promotion of biodiversity conservation in society.
We are actively implementing a variety of projects to create a society with rich biodiversity.
Environmental Education and Activities
Further, we are making a variety of efforts, including seminars on the environment given by outside experts in future biodiversity offset management and e-learning on the environment undertaken for all officers and employees, to provide our employees with a better understanding of the importance of the connection of the construction business and social life with the natural environment.

|Vibrations||In response to complaints about vibrations made by regular vehicles passing over the road surface lining, cushioning materials were placed underneath the lining to reduce gaps, and the pavement was repaired.|
|Dust||In response to complaints about the dust from the cutting of the concrete ditch of the exterior, water was sprayed during the operation to prevent the dust from flying around.|
|Traffic obstruction||In response to complaints about traffic jams during traffic control, the traffic guides were re-trained for the signs and calls to give, and the locations of the traffic guides and information boards were improved.|
|Radiowave interference||In response to complaints about the interference of radio waves used by the sub contractors with television waves, the use of radio waves was prohibited at the construction sites.|
Taisei Corporation takes the appropriate measures regarding complaints related to the environment reported to its construction sites, etc., and maintains records and reports using communication sheets based on the EMS procedures and communicates across the relevant departments and the Company when necessary.
Recently, more opinions have been provided by citizen groups, to which we strive to respond appropriately.
Proper Management of Construction Waste
Taisei Corporation has been promoting the use of the electronic manifest (waste transmittal forms) in cooperation with outsourcing companies for waste processing, collection and transport companies, and waste disposal companies in order to achieve the proper processing of construction waste. As a result, its use in major cities such as the metropolitan area is virtually 100%. While there are some cases where the electronic manifest system cannot be introduced due to the conditions of the construction site or customer or the scale of the companies, we are continuing to make efforts to increase this percentage.
|Rate of Using Electronic Manifest at Construction Sites||･･･93.9%|
Comprehensive Activities for the Environment
Eco Model Project
Of all the construction sites striving for CO2 Zero Action, Taisei Corporation selects those working to reduce the environmental impact at a particularly advanced construction stage as an Eco Model Project to further implement CO2 reduction activities, etc.
This project was extended to the overseas construction sites in FY2014, and from its commencement in 2002, a total of 139 sites had implemented the project by March 2016.
As part of the project, we have also been working for the effective use of resources such as the 3R*, and we contribute to CO2 reduction through the sorting and volume reduction of 100 types of waste materials.
