Development of Mixed-Hybrid Finite Element Method Simulation Code for Gas-Liquid Two-phase Flow Problem
Makoto ONO*1 and Shunichi SUZUKI*2
The Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Finite Volume Method (FVM) are conventional numerical schemes for groundwater simulation. They are widely used without awareness of their advantages and disadvantages. FEM is very flexible for discretization but the mass of fluids is not conserved locally. FVM guarantees locally mass conservation but is sensitive to the spatial discretization grid. In this work, we introduce the Mixed-Hybrid Finite Element Method (MH-FEM). MH-FEM is an accepted numerical scheme that has the flexibility for discretization as well as guarantees local mass conservation almost in heterogeneous field. We have developed MH-FEM code that enables to simulate with high quality and usefulness for compressive gas-liquid two-phase flow problem, which is strongly nonlinear, thereby correlating effective permeability and capillary pressure to water saturation.
