The Regeneration of Rare Submerged Plants from Soil Seed Bank of Lake Inba

The shores of lakes and marshes form areas where vegetation is in transition (eco-tones) that between land and water. Such an eco-tone is home to aquatic plants such as emergent plants, floating-leaved plants and submerged plants. Aquatic plants contribute to purification of the water and provide a habitat for various other organisms. However, one third of these aquatic plants are endangered as a result of environmental changes such as water pollution, lakeshore protection work, and so on. Particularly affected are the submerged plants, which live under the water's surface. The focus of this study is Lake Inba, in Japan's Chiba prefecture, where submerged plants are disappearing. We gathered soil from below reclaimed land, which formed the lake bed in former times. We hen carried out a germination experiment with soil seed banks from the lake bed soil in water tanks. We confirmed that the submerged plants germinating in the experiment included rare species, corresponding to endangered species mentioned in the Red Data List of the Ministry of the Environment. This demonstrates that the old lake bed soil can be used as a soil seed bank.
