The development is described of a shield segment using steel fiber reinforced concrete that improves durability and maintenance performance by preventing in-service cracks and eliminates the problem of concrete lumps falling. At 2000 mm, the diameter of the developed segment is Japan's largest. Full-scale test specimens were manufactured to verify the production process and the correct transfer of stress. Load tests were carried out to determine any differences and similarities between the behavior of RC and reinforced steel fiber (RSF) segments. The RSF segment is shown to have higher stiffness and flexural capacity compared to an RC segment. Nonlinear 3D finite element analysis using the DIANA9.1 code was also carried out. When a tension softening curve obtained from experimental results is used and the equivalent length is taken to be the experimental crack interval, the analysis for both RSF and RC cases closely matches the experimental observations.
