Applying slender RC columns using ultra high strength concrete have advantages in terms of effective floor area and effective use of its compressive properties. These columns constitute structures together with seismic isolation, response control systems and shear walls, and need to have horizontal displacement capacity and axial load capacity during earthquake motions. It is important to understand the behavior of additional moment and buckling due to the slenderness of column.
This study deals with the structural performance of slender RC columns using concrete with compressive strength of 300 N/mm2. Structural experiment and geometric nonlinear analysis are conducted and the following conclusions are obtained.
1. Under the condition that the axial load ratio is 0.33 or lower, the columns have the horizontal displacement capacity of 1/50 rad. or more in drift angle.
2. Under the condition that the drift angle is 1/100 rad., the columns have the axial load capacity of 60% of the compressive strength.
3. Buckling occurred on the columns under antisymmetrical moment whose ratio of the length to the depth is 40 or more.
