Namikata LPG, Liquefied Petroleum Gas, underground storage Plant has been constructed at Ehime Prefecture in Shikoku Island within a framework of the Japanese National Fuel Storage Strategy. Among 1.5 million tons of total storage amount, 0.45 million tons of LPG is planned to be stored at Namikata. The hydraulic sealing system, that uses groundwater flow into an unlined cavern to contain pressurized LPG within a cavern, is adopted in Japan for LPG underground storage. Cross-border cooperation within Taisei was essential to complete this challenging project. In this paper, various technical issues, mainly handled cooperatively by Technology Center, during construction stage and final achievement are summarized.
