The structural response of a high-rise building is strongly affected by the duration of the ground motion. It is important to consider characteristics of regional variability in envelope models for design earthquake motions. In this study, envelope models were examined statistically using strong motion records of subduction earthquakes that have occurred in and around the Kanto region. The strong motion records were modeled with a Jennings’ type model that consists of three parts: initial part, strong part, and attenuating part. The results show that the duration of the strong part increases with the magnitude and the distance to the hypocenter, while the attenuating part is more dependent on the distance to the hypocenter than on the magnitude. A comparison of site conditions based on Vs30 shows that the envelope model haa a longer duration on the soft soil site than that on the stiff soil site. Finally, regional variability was indicated by the differences in the envelope models for the Kanto region and other regions.
