In mountain tunnel construction projects, tunnel displacements are measured using a total station for the purpose of daily construction management. In Japan, two-dimensional displacements are generally calculated for a cross-section of the tunnel and used to evaluate the reasonability of the primary support and the stability of the tunnel crown.
On the other hand, some forward ground prediction methods have been proposed in Austria. In those methods, tunnel displacements in the direction of the tunnel axis are added to the two-dimensional displacements. In this study, a numerical analysis was conducted to examine the principle behind those predictions. The applicability of those methods is validated using data collected from Tsubakizaka tunnel.
