Seismic Retrofit of High-Rise Building against Long-Period Ground Motions

In the middle of this century, large earthquakes are expected to occur along the subduction-zone of the western Japanese islands, with long-period ground motions reaching major urban areas to violently shake high-rise buildings.
Oil dampers are an effective method for reinforcing existing high-rise buildings. However, ordinary dampers require reinforcement of the surrounding columns and beams to support the large reaction forces generated by dampers during ground motions of an earthquake. To solve this problem, we developed a deformation-dependent oil damper. It reduces the damping force when frame deformation nears its maximum value. Because the reaction force acting on the surrounding frame is reduced, the columns, beams, and foundation do not require reinforcement.
We seismically retrofitted the Shinjuku Center Building in Tokyo using these deformation-dependent oil dampers. Although the building was already in compliance with the current earthquake-resistance standards of the building code, seismic retrofitting enhanced the asset value in terms of business continuity in the event of damage from long-period ground motions.
