Precast prestressed concrete (PCaPC) beams with high-strength rebars and multiple large openings have tremendous potential in architectural applications. They are not only high in quality, but also allow for larger building spaces and smaller and lighter beams, and enable equipment systems to be changed in the future.
This study experimentally evaluated the structural and fire performances of the PCaPC beams using full-scale specimens. In structural tests, two specimens were tested using as the test parameter the specification for shear reinforcement. The results confirmed that PCaPC beams have adequate ultimate bending moment and shear strength under permanent loads. In fire tests, three specimens were tested using as test parameters the level of vertical loading (48 to 78% of ultimate bending moment at room temperature) and the quantity of shear reinforcement (0.3 to 1.2% of ratio of shear reinforcement). The results confirmed that PCaPC beams under a permanent load can resist fire for more than 3 hours.
Furthermore, this paper provides a brief overview of the fabrication and installation of PCaPC beams in the Taisei Sapporo Building in Sapporo, Japan, and the Minatomirai Center Building in Yokohama, Japan, the latter of which is scheduled to be completed in May 2010.
