After the petroleum contaminated soil containing heavy oil fractions was treated by heating treatment at 200 to 250℃, the concentration of its total petroleum hydrocarbons by solvent extraction was almost removed. It shows not only light oil fractions on petroleum contaminated soil are vaporized for removal by heating but also heavy oil fractions are insolubilizated on the soil. A pilot test using the rotary kiln demonstrated that the concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbon after thermal treatment were able to be reduced less than 500 mg/kg.
