We have developed a new recirculating denitrification system that uses bacteria. The system is part of a technological development that greatly reduced energy and costs at the aquarium’s wastewater treatment plant. For this study, we determined the optimum conditions necessary for bacteria’s denitrification reaction. We then tested the system and confirmed its performance in a tank that had been used for breeding sea fish at the aquarium.
1. Sodium acetate as an electron donor and granular sludge as microbe carrier were assumed to provide the catalyst support necessary for efficient denitrification in an anaerobic environment.
2. The denitrifying bacteria were confirmed to be Thauera sp., which degrades acetic acid, and marine Marinobacter sp.. After a two-month experiment, these denitrifying bacteria comprised 70% of all of the bacteria.
3. In a demonstration test, the recirculating denitrification system removed 95% or more of the nitrate-nitrogen from the breeding water in a fish tank at the aquarium.
Because this system efficiently removes nitrogen, the cost of maintaining water quality is greatly reduced.
