UFC has been used for the first time for a railway bridge, the "Kayo River Bridge", on the Sangi Railway in Mie Prefecture, Japan. The old railway bridge across the Kayo River required rebuilding because river improvements had broadened the river and raised the estimated high-water level (H.W.L.). A pre-stressed concrete U-girder was designed with a slab thickness of 390 mm. However, it was necessary to reduce the thickness of the slab to 250 mm or less so as not to change the height of the railroad track. By using UFC, the thickness of the slab could be reduced, thereby avoiding the need to change of the height of the railroad track and lowering the total cost of the project. This paper presents an overview of the design and construction of this bridge and the results of displacement and noise measurements.
