In order to ensure the continuation of business after an earthquake, server rooms in data centers, etc., must be equipped with both vertical and horizontal seismic isolation systems. Conventionally, a vertical isolation floor system using pneumatic springs and oil dampers is adopted. The natural period of a vertical isolation floor, however, is limited to about 0.7 seconds in order to suppress walking induced vibrations. Therefore, its performance depends on the characteristics of the input seismic excitation. We have developed a high-performance vertical isolation floor system that combines a rotary inertia mass device with a pneumatic spring, which increases the natural period of the isolation floor to a maximum of 1.8 seconds. To confirm the performance of the new vertical vibration isolation floor system, we conducted a seismic response analysis of a model building, along with shaking table tests on an actual-size vertical vibration isolation floor. The results confirmed that the system provides adequate isolation performance.
