Recently in Japan, ultra high strength concrete is often used for the lower story columns in high-rise reinforced concrete buildings. Such columns are subject mainly to high axial loads and lateral loads during earthquake motions. However this material is suitable not only for these members but also for slender reinforced concrete columns in low- and middle-rise buildings, which are subject mainly to axial loads. In earthquake regions, they can be realized with seismic isolation and response control systems.
This paper describes the behavior of slender columns using ultra high strength concrete under reverse cyclic lateral loads with axial load. The representative specimens had a nominal concrete strength of 200 N/mm2.
The following tests results and conclusions were obtained.
1. Cracks were negligible, and the relationship between shear and drift indicated nonlinear elastic behavior.
2. Shear force reached the maximum with compressive failure of the cover concrete at the end. In some specimens, the maximum drift angle was 1/50 or more.
