In the underground construction project of the Horonobe Underground Research Center, two vertical shafts, the ventilation and the east main shafts, are being excavated using the Short Step method. It is significant to interpret the behavior of the concrete lining that constitutes the main structural member of the shafts, and to construct a reasonable design method that takes into consideration the long-term safety of the concrete lining. This paper examines the behavior of the concrete lining and the rock mass around the shaft during excavation. To reflect the actual excavation sequence, a three-dimensional incremental excavation analysis is performed. In the analysis the initial state of rock mass stress and the variation of mechanical characteristics of the concrete lining according to the material age are considered, modeling in detail the rock mass and the support members around an advancing shaft face. The analysis demonstrates specific phenomena of the Short Step method, that are often seen through measurements of the radial rock mass displacement and the stress in the concrete lining. The analysis also reveals that concrete lining stress distribution changes in a complicated manner in the radial and the axial directions.
