The Effect on Thermal Stress of Applying Expansive Concrete to a Tunnel Concrete Lining

The purpose of this research is to investigate whether applying expansive concrete to a tunnel concrete lining can reduce thermal stress in the summer months. Measurement equipment was set up in a section constructed of ordinary concrete and expansive concrete. The measurements were quantitatively evaluated to determine the effect of the expansive concrete on crack prevention and the external restraint at the back of the tunnel concrete lining. The results showed that the expansive concrete reduced tensile stress to about 0.3-0.5 N/mm2 and raised the minimum crack index to between 0.3 and 0.8. Moreover, the external restraint was very small at the back of the tunnel concrete lining. Therefore, applying expansive concrete below the spring line, where tensile stress is generated, may have prevented cracking.
