In recent years, global warming caused by the greenhouse effect has become a serious problem for the world. Biomass derived from various organic wastes has been widely cited as an alternative energy source to oil, since it is carbon neutral according to decrease of the CO2 production. Here, we describe the characteristics of a new non-dilution methane fermentation method that can be applied to wet biomass such as food waste. Other similar methods suffer from the problem of methane production being inhibited by ammonium ions resulting from microbiological protein degradation. The fermentation system developed by the authors consists of an ammonium fermentation process, an ammonia stripping process and a methane fermentation process. The system is able to maintain methane fermentation with high efficiency and stability.
Currently a pilot-scale test of this non-dilution methane fermentation system is under way in Kamaishi City, Iwate prefecture, Japan, where methane is being produced from fishery and food waste.
