The possibility of using a laser to cut and remove stainless steel liners from concrete walls and floors in cells and fuel storage pools at nuclear facilities was investigated. The effects of basic laser cutting parameters such as cutting speed, assist gas flow, etc., were first studied using a 1kW Nd:YAG laser concrete specimens lined with 3 mm thick stainless steel sheets. This initial study was followed by studies on the effect of unevenness in the liner surface and on methods of confining the contamination that is produced during the cutting process.
The results showed that if the cutting speed, assist gas flow rate and other parameters are properly chosen, it is possible to cut stainless steel sheets lined on concrete surfaces. A new method of preventing the sparks and dross produced during cutting from scattering is also proposed.
