Ultra high strength Fiber reinforced Concrete (UFC) is marketed under the brand name of Ductal. Ductal has ultra high strength, durability, and fluidity. Structural members, in principle, can be designed without reinforcing bars. Although it has been used for footbridges due to its excellent material characteristics, it had not been applied to a road bridge in Japan. This paper describes the development of a composite bridge with Ductal girders and a conventional concrete deck slab. The design and construction method were developed through experiments and analyses. This technology was applied to the Horikoshi C Ramp Bridge, at the North-Kyushu Junction of the East-Kyushu Expressway. It was the first road bridge in Japan to be constructed using UFC. A load test confirmed the performance of the bridge.
