The establishment of recycling-society is an important subject in 21st century in contrast to the social system based on mass-production, mass-consumption, and mass-dumping in 20th century. The key technology of the establishment of recycling-society is to convert waste materials into natural resources for the energy production. The biomass is very attractive material because it is reproducible.
The construction industry in Japan discharges 5 million tons of waste wood annually, which has potential to be biomass resources. The aim of our study was to produce ethanol from waste wood of construction industry. For this purpose, Taisei Corporation, Marubeni Corporation and Tsukishima Kikai Co. introduced the genetically modified bacteria (KO11) developed by BCI of the U.S. to convert pentose sugars into ethanol. The test for the practical application has conducted using the subsidies of Ministry of the Environment, which includes the use of waste materials discharged in Japan as a nutritious component of culture media. These tests successfully demonstrated the economical production of ethanol from waste wood. First construction of commercial plants has already launched on August, 2005 in Sakai, Osaka, Japan.
