Biological Treatment of BTEX Contaminated Air

Toxic BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene) hydrocarbons readily contaminate the environment (e.g. soil, ground water, air etc.) as a result of their high solubility and volatility. Although activated carbon can be used to remove these contaminants, the cost is high and the problem of treating BTEX adsorbed to the carbon remains. Recently, biological methods have been shown to detoxify BTEX at a reduced cost and with the added benefit of being more environmentally friendly.
In this study, the effectiveness of biological treatment of BTEX contaminated air was investigated. Continuous treatment of o-xylene contaminated air using BTEX degrading bacteria was conducted in laboratory. The results of experiment and feasibility study suggest that biological treatment is useful for removal of BTEX contaminant from air.
