In order to revitalize our company, we have increased the number of women we hire. Currently, women account for about 25% of all new employees. At the same time, female employees are assigned to a wider range of responsibility, and an increasing number of female employees play an active role in the management of construction projects and sales divisions.

Return-to-work program

The return-to-work program provides opportunities to return to work for employees who leave the company due to pregnancy, childbirth, child rearing, nursing care, or other reasons. Under this program, established in April 2008, some employees have returned to work for the company.

Employment of middle-aged and elderly persons

By expanding its reemployed personnel system, Taisei is creating an environment that allows its employees with high levels of know-how and advanced technical skills to work for the company even after their mandatory retirement and to find such work rewarding. By doing so, the company hands the technology and knowledge gained through long years of experience over to the next generation.

Respect for human rights

Under the slogan “Aiming at a friendly and supportive society in which all people lead vibrant lives,” Taisei is carrying out activities to raise the awareness of its employees with regard to human rights.

Human rights policy

Taisei Corporation respects the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the eight Core Conventions of the International Labour Organization, and includes human rights policy in its Charter of Corporate Conduct.
We indicate clearly to our employees that we will not tolerate any discrimination for reasons of origin, religion, gender, nationality, social status, or physical condition, and that we will fully comply with the laws and regulations of local communities and respect local cultures and customs in our overseas business operations. We also prohibit any child labour and forced labour, oppose any discrimination in respect of employment and occupation, and guarantee freedom of association and the right to organize and bargain collectively.

System for raising the awareness of employees regarding human rights

In 1984, in order to help its employees to further build character and to develop employees with a keen awareness of human rights, Taisei established its Committee on the Promotion of Measures against Social Discrimination. Later, in 1990, the company renamed it the Human Rights Awareness Committee, the name which it is known by today. This Committee, chaired by a director who is the deputy head of the Business Administration Division at Taisei, annually formulates basic policy and action plans and reports the results it brought in the previous year. It also makes the company’s human rights policy known to all employees through the equivalent committees at branch offices, thus striving to create a keener awareness of human rights among the employees.

Training for raising employee awareness of human rights

The fundamental policy of Taisei’s training program for raising employee awareness on human rights is to respect the autonomy of each and every employee, encouraging them to think, learn, and act on their own initiative rather than instructing and urging them to memorize what is being taught. When providing this training, the company considers it important to convey various kinds of information, such as the realities and related legislation to employees in a timely manner so that they can acquire the necessary knowledge and to enhance the employees’ awareness of, and refine their sensitivity regarding, human rights. Incorporated into Taisei’s human resources development scheme, this training program is provided to all employees as a required subject in the training program designed for each organizational level or business unit. In FY2010, 8,140 employees attended this training program.

Monitoring of, and action taken to ensure, compliance with human rights norms

Taisei has established a section to provide by phone advice regarding human rights, sexual and power harassment, and other problems with the aim of identifying specific internal issues that it needs to address, and actively preventing and eliminating such problems. Furthermore, in its Code of Conduct for Officers and Employees, the company stipulates that “every Officer and Employee shall respect the fundamental human rights of individuals and shall not discriminate against religion, gender, nationality, social status, disabilities, etc., nor commit any act in violation of human rights, such as sexual harassment,” and has put in place a system for the reporting of violations of this code and of other irregularities. Through this system, the company investigates reports of such violations from inside and outside the organization and notifies divisions supervising the offenders of its response and the corrective action they should take. It also imposes disciplinary action on offenders, corrects the situations caused by such violations, and strives to prevent the recurrence of similar violations.
