Conservation of the ecosystem

Support for the Gratitude-to-Borneo Project

Taisei Corporation has set up drink vending machines equipped with donation functions inside the Head Office at the Shinjuku Center building and construction sites (Tokyo branch offices) since December 2009, and is carrying out activities for contribution to society by donating the proceeds to BCT Japan. Presently, the tropical rain forests on Borneo Islands in Malaysia are dwindling year by year, and the ecosystem of wildlife inhabiting the Kinabatangan river basin in Sabah state, such as the Orangutan and Borneo elephant, is on the verge of a major destruction. In these circumstances, the Non-Profit Organization BCT Japan (Borneo Conservation Trust) has set up the Borneo Repayment Project in association with Mr. Bando (pictured), Head of the Asahiyama Zoo, and has initiated a movement to protect Borneo's wildlife. In order to endorse and support this effort, Taisei has set up the vending machines equipped with donation functions at the Head Office as well as construction sites. Till 2011, a total amount of around 1,200,000 yen was donated. We received a testimonial of appreciation from BCT Japan.

"Forest Saver Project: Nanryo Forest," a project developed as part of a forest creation project called Eco-factory Mt. Fuji

In the Mt. Fuji "Forest Saver Project: Nanryo Forest," which is being carried out at the Eco-factory Mt. Fuji Taisei is currently developing, Taisei and businesses operating there collaborate with administrative agencies, universities, and local NPOs and communities to afforest neighboring areas with the aim of developing them into bountiful forests in ten years. This long-term project is designed to develop people who can protect and cultivate forests. On October 23, 2009, an area adjacent to the industrial area became the base for activities related to this project. The construction of "Mt. Fuji Environmental Exchange Plaza" incorporating facilities for harvesting the power of nature, such as rain water utilization equipment, etc., was completed and gifted to Fujinomiya City. In addition, many successive events are being planned, such as the 11th "Uruoi no Mori" Tree Planting Festival to be co-hosted with Fujinomiya City on October 31, 2010.

Support for the animal pathway study group

Animal pathwayAnimal pathway

Designated by the government as a protected species of animal, dormice, who are tree dwellers, are on the verge of extinction as forests are disrupted by road construction and other factors and their habitats are being reduced. In order to maintain the ecosystem by securing their habitats and facilitating their reproduction, Taisei has participated in the animal pathway study group since its inception. The company has provided technical cooperation in the construction of animal pathways and collaborated with members of the group in proof of concepts for monitoring systems and succeeded in the collection of data on the actual condition of dormice. Because of these accomplishments, Taisei received the Japan Society of Civil Engineers' Environmental Award in 2008. We won the First Ikimono-Nigiwai Company Activity Contest. Also, construction of a second animal pathway was completed in Hokuto city in March 2010, and started operations.
